The Welfare of Stray Dogs is a non-profit trust dedicated to protecting and improving the lives
of
Mumbai's street dogs.
Since 1985, we have been working tirelessly to provide rescue, medical care, sterilization, and
vaccination programs
that create a safer environment for both dogs and people.
Our mission began with stopping
the
mass culling of street
dogs, and today, we continue to advocate for humane and sustainable solutions. Through our
sterilization program,
community engagement, and compassionate care, we have made a lasting impact across the city—from
Cuffe Parade to Malad
and Sion.

Our humane sterilisation program, run in partnership with Mumbai’s civic body, helps control the street dog population through safe surgeries, vaccinations, and community collaboration. The impact is visible across neighborhoods we serve.
We follow WHO guidelines, conducting mass anti-rabies vaccination drives across Mumbai. Every dog sterilised is vaccinated, and weekly drives ensure wide coverage. With over 80,000 dogs vaccinated and strict safety standards followed, we also spread awareness through public education to help build safer communities.
WSD’s OPD at Sewri offers free treatment for sick and injured street animals from 11 AM to 4 PM. Pathology tests, minor surgeries, and even orthopedic procedures are done by our inhouse vets. Many animal lovers regularly bring in street animals for care and recovery.
Our field team treats hundreds of injured and sick street animals right in their own territory, reducing stress and aiding faster recovery. Serious cases are brought to our centre. With trained nurses, volunteers, and ambulances, we respond daily to calls across the city.
From free OPD services and in-kennel care to regular visits by consulting homeopath and first-aid workshops, WSD provides holistic treatment to street animals. We manage both minor and serious cases with compassion, offering surgeries, diagnostics, and support through trained vets, visiting specialists, and dedicated volunteers.
We believe that public acceptance is critical to the success of the sterilisation program. Our education program reaches out to different sections of the public and explains the benefits of sterilising dogs. It is also an important tool in the rabies eradication project, as we use it to communicate important information about rabies and its prevention.
We rehome abandoned pets and Indies through a thoughtful process similar to that used for human child adoption. Every adopter is screened, interviewed, and encouraged to bond with their chosen dog. Temperament tests ensure the right match, and all dogs over 3 months are vaccinated before going to a loving, responsible home.
Love for animals is of course what drives volunteers to WSD. But more importantly, it is the ability to act rationally and responsibly that makes them truly valuable.
